Striped Ice


The world is truly an amazing artist. 

The photographs here are of striped icebergs.  They are formed by layers of snow that react to different conditions.

The blue stripes can be created when a crevice in the ice opens up, fills with melt-water and then freezes so quickly no air bubbles form.Amazing Striped Icebergs by hotelcurly

When glaciers or icebergs calve, the piece falls into the sea, trapping salt water that may be rich in algae underneath.  This can produce a green stripe.Fwd: Amazing Striped Icebergs by mickhart1967

Brown, black and yellow rifts are caused by glaciers that have pushed their way across the ground to the sea, collecting different sediments.Amazing Striped Icebergs by hotelcurly
